Product Overview

The Perfect Match for 15–45 HP Tractors
The SG24 3-Point PTO Stump Grinder is engineered to pair perfectly with tractors rated between 15 to 45 HP. It’s compatible with Category I 3-point hitches and also fits ASABE quick hitches, making it easy and efficient to operate.
Equipped with a heavy-duty 24-inch solid steel grinding wheel and 34 tungsten carbide teeth, the SG24 makes stump removal quick and effortless. Its rugged, well-designed structure allows you to grind tree stumps up to 6 inches below ground level, effectively removing roots and preparing the area for landscaping or reseeding.
The SG24 comes standard with a 1-3/8", 6-spline PTO shaft with a built-in slip clutch to help protect your equipment from overload damage. It’s designed to run at 540 RPM and performs best when used with tractors that have an independent PTO system, allowing you to control the tractor’s ground speed separately from the grinder’s RPM for more precise operation.
A built-in chainsaw holder on top of the unit provides added convenience, making it easy to carry your chainsaw for additional trimming or cutting on the job.

I got my grinder 2 weeks ago. I did eleven stumps so far and many more to do. This unit is very well built. I use it on my JD 2305 which pairs up very well. Take time at first to learn how it works and now I can do a medium size tree in 20 mins. Farmy called me to confirm shipping, the container it came in was very rugged with bubble wrap around all separate parts. I am very impressed.

After about 15 stumps, I started to notice a drop in bite. The teeth weren’t dull yet, but probably due for a flip soon. I cleaned the grinder after every use and greased the joints—maintenance isn’t bad if you keep up with it.

Tried it on a 10” oak stump and it chewed through it with no real strain. I go slow and let the disc do the work. The grinder kicks up a lot of chips, so eye protection is a must. So far, performance is what I hoped for.

Unpacking was straightforward, and the grinder looked solid right out of the crate. It took about an hour to assemble everything and hook it to my 40HP Massey. One bolt hole needed a little filing to line up, but otherwise a clean install.

Delivery took about 10 business days, just like the website said. The crate arrived in great shape—no damage, no missing parts, and everything was well-secured inside. For a piece of equipment this size, I thought the handling was solid. Would’ve liked a few more tracking updates along the way, but overall the shipping process was smooth.

FAQs

1. Is it better to grind a stump or remove it?

Grinding a stump with a stump removal grinder is usually the more efficient and practical solution compared to full removal. When you grind stumps, the equipment cuts the wood down below ground level, leaving the roots to decay naturally. This process is designed to be quick, affordable, and less disruptive to your yard or landscape.

Full stump removal, on the other hand, requires digging out the entire root system, which is labor-intensive and may damage surrounding soil. Unless you need the area cleared for new construction, grinding is the better choice for most tree owners.

2. What are the disadvantages of stump grinding?

While stump grinding is efficient and equipped with the right tools, there are a few considerations:

  • Roots remain: Grinding does not remove the entire root system, so the tree cannot regrow, but the roots take time to break down.
  • Wood chips and debris: Grinding produces a large pile of shredded wood and log material, which must be removed or used as mulch.
  • Size limits: Extremely large or hard stumps may take longer, requiring heavy-duty equipment and accessories like hardened steel cutting teeth.

Despite these, stump grinding remains the safest and most practical stump removal grinder method for homeowners, landscapers, and contractors.

3. How deep to go when stump grinding?

Most stump grinders are engineered to grind between 6 to 12 inches below ground level. This depth is enough to cut past the main roots and prevent future issues while allowing the area to be replanted or re-sodded.

Some products are built with adjustable features, letting you choose the right depth based on your work needs. For large landscaping projects, deeper grinding may be recommended to fully protect the soil surface and prepare it for continued use.

4. What happens if you don't grind a tree stump?

Leaving tree stumps behind can lead to multiple problems:

  • Safety hazards: Stumps are tripping risks, especially in public or family spaces where safety and privacy matter.
  • Pests and rot: Decaying wood attracts termites, ants, and fungi that may spread to nearby trees or structures.
  • Regrowth: Some stumps send up new shoots from the roots, making your yard work harder over time.
  • Aesthetic issues: An untreated stump looks unsightly and lowers property value.

Grinding the stump down with the right equipment is the best way to protect your landscape and save time in the long run.

5. What machine is used to grind stumps?

A stump removal grinder (commonly called a stump grinder) is the specialized equipment used to cut and shred tree stumps into small pieces. These machines are engineered with rotating steel cutting wheels, powerful engines, and protective features to handle different stump sizes.

They come in various levels — from compact homeowner tools to heavy-duty contractor products. Many models are equipped with safety shields, ergonomic controls, and accessories for added performance.

6. What is the best tool to remove a tree stump?

The best tool depends on your needs, experience, and the size of the stump:

  • For small logs or stumps, manual tools like axes, saws, or digging bars may work, but they take significant time and effort.
  • For medium to large stumps, a stump removal grinder is the most efficient, designed to cut through tough wood and roots quickly while keeping safety in mind.
  • Professional-grade equipment is the top choice for contractors or municipalities who need high-level production and reliability.

Choosing the right grinder ensures your work is easy, safe, and built to handle ongoing stump removal projects.
